
Rajkot: Some 5.7 tonnes of a farmer’s cumin worth nearly Rs 5 lakh was stolen from house at Vaghasia village in Wankaner taluka of Morbi district.
The 72-year-old farmer, Habib Mathakia, filed a complaint at Wankaner City police station, stating that 5,700kg of cumin, worth Rs 4.71 lakh, was stolen from his storage area on April 17.
Mathakia said that around 152 maunds (about 5,700kg) of cumin stored in 60 plastic sacks at his ancestral house in Vaghasia village was stolen. The market price of cumin is currently Rs 3,100 a maund.
Mathakia further said the cumin crop had been grown on his ancestral land in Vaghasia village as part of the summer season and had yielded about 700 maund. Of his harvest, some 200 maunds had already been sold for Rs 5,200 a maund.
On April 17, a trader visited the house to buy the cumin. On entering the storage area, it was discovered that 60 of the 200 sacks were missing.
